Anemia occurs when there is a deficiency of hemoglobin in the blood. The most common cause of anemia is having low levels of iron in the blood since the body needs iron to produce hemoglobin. There are several reasons why the iron levels may be low.

  • A poor diet – Not having a balanced diet could result in a deficiency of iron. For example when children drink a lot of milk and do not eat other foods that contain iron.
  • Loss of blood – When women have very strong menstrual periods or have just given birth. Also, when there is internal bleeding in the digestive tract.
  • Rapid growth periods in children and adolescents.
