The thyroid gland regulates one of the most important functions of the body, metabolism. An underactive thyroid causes the pulse, the energy level, and the rate at which the body burns calories to be slower. On the other hand, if the thyroid is overactive then it accelerates these processes.

The most common thyroid problem is an under active thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism. Typically, those who suffer from this problem are women, seniors aged 60, and people who have a history of hypothyroidism in the family. Globally, the most common cause is a deficiency in iodine. However, in the United States and some other more developed countries, the causes may vary.

1. Selenium:

Selenium activates thyroid hormones in order to enable them to do their job. Eat a handful of Brazilian nuts at least 5 times a week to get this mineral.

2. Iodine:

Iodine plays a very important role in the production of hormones by the thyroid. The problem is that if too much iodine is ingested, thyroid problems can aggravate. The recommended amount is 150 mcg per day. Sources of iodine are iodized salt and algae.

3. Zinc:

In studies conducted at the University of Massachucetts, an improvement was observed in women with thyroid problems who took a supplement of zinc. The suggested amount is 10 mg of zinc daily.

4. L-Tyrosine:

A deficiency of this amino acid limits the amount of hormones that the thyroid can produce. However, too much can be over stimulating for the individual. For the recommended amount consult your doctor.
