Valerian Valeriana officinalis L. has been used as a sedative and anti-anxiety treatment for over 2000 years. However, while its properties to combat anxiety have been accepted, its role as a sedative, has not.
Some studies have shown that Valerian tea combats insomnia by reducing the amount of time it takes for the person to fall asleep, and by improving sleep quality. It is believed that the tea is more effective if drunk on a daily basis as opposed to drinking it only once. However, if taken for more than 2 to 4 months in a row, it could cause insomnia.
The use of Valerian tea is not recommended during pregnancy or breast-feeding because not enough studies have been made regarding the safety of it during these periods.
